12 Tips for a Winning Resume
Your resume is your passport to this step: the interview. In just a few seconds, it must convince, reassure, and inspire confidence. Here are 12 essential tips (plus a bonus!) to help you craft a resume that is clear, professional, and impossible to ignore.
1. Use white space strategically
30 seconds — that’s how long a recruiter spends on a resume. A cluttered layout gets discarded immediately. Let the information breathe.
2. Professional from the font up
No more than two fonts: one for headings, one for text. Simplicity + consistency + readability = impact.
3. Highlight what’s recent and relevant
Showcase your key achievements, recent roles, and anything directly connected to your target job. Old school electives don’t matter anymore.
4. One resume per application
Each job = one tailored resume. Use the company’s vocabulary, integrate the right keywords, and emphasize relevant accomplishments. Adapt—don’t invent.
5. Add a touch of color (just a touch)
A subtle accent is enough. Avoid overly “creative” templates: recruiters want clarity, not decoration.
6. Quantify your achievements
% of revenue, number of clients, size of team, number of projects: numbers speak louder than adjectives. Be selective and ready to discuss them during interviews.
7. Keep it short and sharp
1 page (early career), max 2 pages otherwise. Use action verbs. Avoid jargon. The first page gets the most attention—make it count.
8. Proofread. Then proofread again.
Check for typos, repetition, and consistency. Nothing should distract from your value. Ask a friend to review it if needed.
9. Name your file properly
Example: Sophie_Charpentier_Resume_Management. Clear, simple, and professional.
10. Applying abroad?
List your work permits, include a local address (if applicable), mention your availability, and follow the country’s resume standards.
11. References available upon request
Add the mention at the bottom of your resume without listing names. Ensure your references are aware… and that your LinkedIn matches your resume.
12. Recent training & certifications
Showcase continuous learning. Include formal training, self-learning, and even volunteer activities that demonstrate your curiosity and initiative.
Bonus tips that make a real difference
If you’re available immediately, say it clearly.
Always include email + phone number.
Avoid naming confidential clients.
Do not include salary expectations.
Resume & LinkedIn must tell the same story.
One application = one tailored resume. Always.
